History
The site consists of a stone-walled garden with a charming cottage and an outer garden with large lawn, shrubbery, mellow trees and mature rockeries from which a 40 metre pier projects into the bay. This provides an excellent facility for mooring a boat, fishing and bird-watching (part of the bay is an important wildfowl sanctuary). The quay was built c. 250 years ago on the site of an ancient jetty associated in legend with the voyages of an early Irish saint, St. Kieran.
The quay was used for maritime trade, with sailing and later steamboat,s to other Irish coastal locations and South Wales. The house was added in 1830 in the style of a traditional Wexford cottage as a ships chandlers and general store. This activity continued until the early part of the Second World War when trading from the quay ceased and the shop became a dwelling house. In the 1960's the house was extended and the grounds were subsequently developed as gardens.
The Hook Peninsula extends southwards from here, has a choice of wonderful sandy beaches (including a blue flag one at Duncannon), coastal walks and historical and archaeological sites with, at the southernmost tip, the Hook Lighthouse which has been in operation since Mediaeval times (At a spot now much favoured by scuba divers).
There is a village shop in Saltmills and a quiet country pub with garden. In Wellingtonbridge (c. 9 km) there are extensive shopping facilities. The country town of Wexford, with its renowned annual international Opera Festival and many other events and facilities, is c. 32 km. away whilst the Historic town of New Ross and the famous Dunbrody replica Famine Ship is at c. 25 km.
